Collection: Calm Room

Creating Calming Spaces for Children with ADHD

Children with ADHD often experience the world at full speed — bright, loud, and fast-moving. Their minds and bodies are constantly processing sensory information, emotions, and impulses. While that energy can be wonderful and creative, it can also become overwhelming.

A Calm Room (sometimes called a Calm Corner or Regulation Space) is a dedicated area designed to help children self-regulate, rest, and reset. It’s a safe, quiet space filled with sensory-friendly tools that encourage calm, emotional awareness, and body connection.

At Sensory Central, our Calm Room Collection was created to give parents, educators, and therapists the tools to help children with ADHD find their balance — through movement, comfort, and mindfulness.

Children with ADHD often have difficulty filtering sensory input, managing emotions, and staying focused. A Calm Room provides the sensory support and structure they need to regulate both mind and body.

1. Promotes Emotional Regulation

Calm Rooms give children a safe space to identify feelings and choose calming strategies. Visual tools like emotion posters or feelings charts guide them to recognise what they’re feeling — instead of reacting impulsively.

2. Provides Sensory Input for Balance

Kids with ADHD often crave movement or pressure to help their bodies feel grounded.
Tools like weighted blankets, lap pads, and wobble chairs provide proprioceptive and vestibular input — which means deep pressure and gentle movement that calm the nervous system.

3. Reduces Overstimulation

Soft lighting, gentle textures, and quiet fidgets reduce sensory overload. Using noise-cancelling headphones or bubble lamps helps block out distractions and create a peaceful, focused environment.

4. Encourages Focus & Independence

A Calm Room helps children learn when they need to take a break and how to use tools to calm down. This builds self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and confidence — important life skills that support classroom and home success.

Building a Calm Room doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive — it’s all about thoughtful design and choosing the right tools for your child’s sensory needs.
